Merzouga has a hot desert climate with almost no rain. Daytime highs run from about 18 °C in January to 42 °C in July, and winter nights can drop close to freezing. The most comfortable months are March to May and late September to November, when days are warm and nights are mild.

Spring: March to May
Spring is the most popular season. Days are warm enough for a T-shirt, the camel ride at sunset is comfortable, and you can sit outside by the campfire with only a light jacket.
The one drawback is wind. Spring is the main season for sandstorms, when strong gusts lift dust and fine sand for a few hours or occasionally a whole day. They are not dangerous if you are with a guide, but they reduce visibility and can cancel the sunset view. A scarf that covers the nose and mouth, and sunglasses or clear glasses, make a real difference.
Summer: June to August
Summer in the Sahara is serious heat. Afternoon temperatures above 40 °C are normal, sand becomes too hot to walk on barefoot, and even nights stay warm. Some camps close or reduce their service in July and August.
A visit is still possible if these are your only dates. Camel rides move to the last hour before sunset and the first hour after sunrise, the middle of the day is spent indoors or by a pool, and air-conditioned tents or rooms matter. Drink far more water than you think you need. Travellers with young children, older relatives or heart conditions should choose another season.
Autumn: September to November
Early September still feels like summer, but from the last week of the month the heat eases quickly. October is one of the best months of the year: warm, clear, usually calm, and with the date harvest under way in the palm groves around Erfoud and Rissani.
November days are mild and bright, and you will want a fleece after dark. Brief rain is possible in autumn. Although totals are tiny, a sudden downpour upstream can send water through dry riverbeds and briefly cut minor roads.
Winter: December to February
Winter days are a pleasure, with blue skies and temperatures in the high teens. The light is low and sharp, which is ideal for photography, and the dunes are quieter outside the Christmas and New Year fortnight.
Nights are the challenge. With no cloud cover and dry air, the temperature falls fast after sunset and can reach 0 °C or a little below in the dunes before dawn. Camps provide heavy blankets, and higher-category camps add heaters, but you should still bring thermal layers, a warm hat and thick socks. The guide to desert camps in Merzouga and Zagora explains the difference between standard and luxury tents.
Rain, wind and sun
Merzouga receives very little rain in a year, and most days in every month are sunny. When rain does fall, it tends to come in short bursts in autumn or as late-summer thunderstorms. After an unusually wet spell, the seasonal lake of Dayet Srji west of the village can fill and attract birds.
The sun is strong all year because of the latitude, the clear air and the reflective sand. Use sunscreen and a hat even in January. Humidity is low, so sweat evaporates quickly and you may not notice how much water you are losing.
What to wear and how to choose your dates
- March to May, October and November: light long sleeves and trousers for the day, a fleece or light down jacket for the evening, a scarf for wind.
- June to September: loose, breathable cotton or linen that covers the skin, a wide hat, sandals plus closed shoes for hot sand.
- December to February: a T-shirt and sweater for the day, then thermal base layers, a proper winter jacket, hat and gloves for the night and sunrise.
For the full list, including what to leave in the vehicle during the camel ride, see the Morocco packing list. If you are choosing between a camel and a 4x4 to reach camp, the camel trekking in Merzouga guide covers how timing changes with the season.
If your dates are flexible, aim for mid-March to mid-May or October to mid-November. If you can only travel in winter, go anyway and pack for cold nights. If you can only travel in midsummer, keep the desert portion short and book a camp with cooling.
Remember that the journey matters too. The roads from Marrakech cross the High Atlas, where snow can fall from December to February, and the road from Fes crosses the Middle Atlas near Ifrane and Azrou, which is also cold in winter. Both the 3-day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and the desert tours from Fes run year-round with timings adjusted to the season.
