Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech, a 9 to 10 hour drive over the High Atlas through Ouarzazate, Tinghir and Erfoud. You can get there with a private driver or guided tour, by rental car, or on a direct daily bus that takes around 12 hours. There is no train and no direct flight.
How far is Merzouga from Marrakech?
By road the distance is roughly 560 km. That sounds manageable until you look at the map: the first 200 km cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, and much of the rest is a two-lane road through oasis towns where traffic slows to village speed.
Pure driving time is 9 to 10 hours. With fuel, lunch and photo stops it becomes a full day of 11 to 12 hours. This is why most travellers split the journey over two days in each direction and treat the road as part of the trip, not as a transfer.
The route, stage by stage
Nearly everyone follows the same road, the N9 to Ouarzazate and then the N10 east, often called the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. Distances and times below are approximate.
| Stage | Distance | Drive time | Worth stopping for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marrakech to Ouarzazate | 195 km | 4 hours | Tizi n'Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou |
| Ouarzazate to Boumalne Dades | 115 km | 2 hours | Skoura palm grove, Kelaat M'Gouna rose valley |
| Boumalne Dades to Tinghir | 50 km | 1 hour | Dades Gorge, Todra Gorge |
| Tinghir to Erfoud | 150 km | 2.5 hours | Old underground irrigation channels (khettaras) |
| Erfoud to Merzouga | 50 km | 1 hour | Rissani market, first view of Erg Chebbi |
The gorges are short detours off the main road and deserve a few hours. Our Todra Gorge and Dades Valley guide explains what to see in each.
Option 1: Private driver or guided tour
This is the most common way to reach Merzouga, and for good reason. A driver who knows the Tichka road handles the mountain bends and the police speed checks while you look out of the window. You stop where you want, and the overnight stay and desert camp are arranged in advance.
The standard format is three days and two nights: day one to the Dades Valley, day two to Merzouga with a camel ride into the dunes and a night in a camp, day three the long drive back. Our 3-day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga follows this pattern.
If you have four or five days, the return leg becomes much more relaxed, or you can continue north and finish in Fes instead of driving the same road twice. You can compare the different lengths on our Sahara desert tours from Marrakech page.
Option 2: Direct bus
Supratours, the bus company linked to the national railway, has long operated a direct daily coach from Marrakech to Merzouga. It usually leaves in the morning and arrives in the evening after about 12 hours, with a meal break around Ouarzazate. CTM, the other main national company, serves towns along the same road, including Ouarzazate, Tinghir and Errachidia.
The bus is the cheapest option and the coaches are comfortable and air-conditioned. The downsides are real, though. You pass Ait Ben Haddou and the gorges without stopping, the mountain section can be hard on anyone prone to motion sickness, and you arrive after dark and need to arrange a pick-up from your accommodation.
Schedules and departure points change, so check times at the station or with the company a day or two ahead, and buy tickets in advance in spring and autumn.
Option 3: Rental car
Driving yourself is realistic if you are comfortable on mountain roads. The route is paved all the way to Merzouga village and a normal car is enough. You only need a 4x4 if you plan to drive off the tarmac to camps behind the dunes, which is better left to local drivers.
Keep in mind a few points:
- Do not drive the Tichka pass at night. There is no lighting, and trucks, animals and pedestrians share the road.
- Speed limits drop sharply at every village and are enforced with radar.
- Fill up in Ouarzazate, Tinghir and Erfoud. Stations are less frequent between towns.
- Plan at least one overnight stop each way, usually in the Dades Valley or Tinghir.

Can you fly to Merzouga?
Merzouga has no airport. The nearest one is Errachidia, about 130 km and two hours north of the dunes. Flights there usually connect through Casablanca, so from Marrakech you would need two flights plus a road transfer.
In practice this saves little time compared with driving and you miss the mountain and valley scenery. Flying makes more sense if you are starting from Casablanca with very few days available.
How many days do you need, and when to go
Three days is the minimum for a round trip from Marrakech. Two days is not enough for Merzouga; with only two days, the closer and smaller dunes near Zagora are the realistic choice.
The most comfortable months are March to May and late September to November, when daytime temperatures in the desert are usually between 20 and 30°C. In July and August Merzouga regularly passes 40°C (104°F). From December to February the days are sunny and mild, but nights in the dunes can fall close to 0°C and snow occasionally closes the Tichka pass for a few hours.
Whatever the season, bring a warm layer for the evening, sunglasses, sunscreen and a scarf for wind and sand. A small overnight bag is easier than a suitcase if you are riding a camel to your camp.
Frequently asked questions
Is the drive from Marrakech to Merzouga worth it?
Yes, if you give it enough time. The road crosses the High Atlas, passes fortified villages, palm groves and two gorges, and ends at dunes up to about 150 m high. Rushed in a single day, it is mostly tiring.
Can I do Marrakech to Merzouga in one day?
It is possible one way, with a very early start and few stops, but you will arrive tired and may miss sunset in the dunes. A return trip in one day is not possible.
Is it better to visit Merzouga from Marrakech or from Fes?
Fes is slightly closer, at around 470 km and 8 hours. Many travellers go in from one city and out to the other, which avoids repeating the road and links Morocco's two main imperial cities.
Is the Tizi n'Tichka road dangerous?
The road has been widened and improved and is used daily by buses and trucks. It is still a winding mountain pass, so it needs a careful driver, daylight and patience behind slow vehicles.
