Ouzoud Waterfalls are the tallest falls in Morocco at about 110 m, located in the Middle Atlas foothills roughly 150 km northeast of Marrakech. The drive takes 2.5 to 3 hours each way, so they make a full day trip. Plan three to four hours on site to walk down, take a boat and eat lunch.
Where Ouzoud is and what to expect
The falls are in Azilal province, near the village of Tanaghmeilt. The El Abid River drops over a red sandstone cliff in three main tiers into a green pool, then continues through a gorge lined with olive, fig and carob trees.
The name is usually linked to an Amazigh word for grinding grain. Small water-powered mills still stand at the top of the falls, and you can look inside one or two of them.
This is a popular weekend spot for Moroccan families as well as foreign visitors. Expect a lively atmosphere, simple cafe terraces stacked along the path, and stalls selling argan oil, tagine pots and fresh orange juice. It is not a wilderness site, but the setting is green and cool compared with Marrakech.
How to get there from Marrakech
The road leaves Marrakech heading northeast across the Haouz plain, then climbs gently through olive groves and red-earth villages. It is paved and in fair condition all the way.

What to do at the falls
- Walk the loop. A stepped path goes down one side of the gorge to the pool and back up the other. Going down takes 20 to 30 minutes with photo stops. Coming up takes longer, and there are several hundred steps.
- Take a raft to the base. Local boatmen row small decorated rafts across the pool to the foot of the falls for a small fee. You will get sprayed, so protect your phone and camera.
- Watch the Barbary macaques. Wild monkeys live in the trees along the quieter side of the gorge. They are used to people. Do not feed them, and keep bags zipped.
- Look from the top. Viewpoints near the old mills let you look straight down the drop. Stay behind the walls; the rock is slippery.
- Follow the river downstream. A footpath continues along the gorge to smaller cascades and pools where it is much quieter. Allow an extra hour.
- Eat with a view. The terrace restaurants serve tagines and grilled meat. Ask the price before you order.
Swimming is possible in some of the lower pools in summer, but the water is cold and there are no lifeguards. Follow local advice about where it is safe on the day.
Best time to visit
The falls flow all year, but the volume changes. March to June is the best period: snowmelt and spring rain make the water strong, the valley is green, and daytime temperatures sit around 20 to 28 °C.
July and August are hot, often 35 °C or more, and the falls are thinner. This is also the busiest time, since many people come to cool off. September and October are warm and calmer. In winter the site is quiet, mornings are cold, and after heavy rain the water runs brown with sediment for a day or two.
On sunny days a rainbow forms in the spray, usually clearest in the afternoon when the sun faces the falls. For fewer crowds, avoid Sundays and Moroccan public holidays and aim to arrive before 11:00.
What to wear and bring
- Closed shoes or sandals with grip. The steps are uneven and wet near the bottom.
- A light waterproof or a spare T-shirt if you plan to take the raft.
- Sun hat, sunscreen and at least a litre of water per person in warm months.
- Small change in dirhams for the raft, toilets, parking and tips. There is no reliable cash machine in the village.
- Swimwear and a small towel in summer.
- A warm layer from November to March.

Do you need a local guide?
The main path is easy to follow, so a guide is not essential. At the car park, local guides will offer to take you round. A good one earns the fee by leading you along the quieter far side, through the olive groves, past the monkeys and to viewpoints that the direct steps miss. Agree the price and the route before you set off.
If mobility is limited, you can still enjoy Ouzoud. The upper viewpoints are a short, mostly flat walk from the parking area and show the full height of the falls without any steps.
Ouzoud compared with other day trips
Ouzoud is the longest of the common day trips from Marrakech in driving terms, but the easiest on your legs once there.
