Merzouga is the gateway to Erg Chebbi, the highest and most photogenic dunes of the Moroccan Sahara. Golden sand ridges rise up to around 150 metres above the desert floor and change colour from orange to pink as the sun moves. This is the Sahara most travellers imagine — and it is where all our desert tours from Marrakech and Fes spend the night.
Every Merzouga tour we organise is private: your own air-conditioned vehicle, a driver who speaks French, English or Spanish, a camel trek at sunset and a night in a desert camp among the dunes. Tell us your dates, where you start and where you want to finish, and we send you a tailor-made itinerary within 24 hours.

Merzouga from Marrakech or from Fes?
- From Marrakech — about 560 km and 9 to 10 hours of driving, so the minimum is 3 days: Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley on day 1, Todra Gorge and the camel trek on day 2, return on day 3. With 4 days or more the pace is much more relaxed.
- From Fes — about 470 km and 7 to 8 hours through Ifrane, the cedar forests and the Ziz Valley. A 3-day round trip brings you back to Fes; a 4-day tour ends in Marrakech.
- One way — the most popular option is Marrakech → Merzouga → Fes (or the reverse), so you never drive the same road twice.
One night or two in the desert?
One night in a desert camp is enough to live the essential: the camel trek at sunset, dinner and music under the stars, and sunrise over the dunes. A second night gives you a full day around Merzouga to visit the Gnawa musicians of Khamlia, nomad families, the market of Rissani or simply to rest — ideal on longer tours of 5 days or more.
Desert camps: standard or luxury
All our tours include a night in a camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes, reached by camel. Standard camps offer comfortable Berber tents, dinner and breakfast. Luxury camps add larger tents with private bathrooms and more comfort — available on request on any itinerary. Tell us your preference when you ask for a quote.
