2 Day Desert Trip from Marrakech: Is It Worth It? Honest Guide

A 2 day desert trip from Marrakech is worth it if you go to Zagora, accept about 7 hours of driving each way and treat it as a journey through the Atlas and kasbahs with one desert night. For tall Merzouga dunes, plan 3 days instead.

A 2 day desert trip from Marrakech is worth it if you go to Zagora and see it as a road trip with one night in the desert, not as a deep Sahara experience. You will cross the High Atlas, visit Ait Ben Haddou, follow the Draa Valley and sleep in a camp on small dunes, but you will spend around 14 hours in the car over two days. If tall dunes are your priority, a 3-day trip to Merzouga is the better choice.

We run 2-day trips every week, and we always give travelers the same honest briefing before they book. Here it is, with the real drive times, the pros and cons, and the alternatives we suggest when 2 days does not fit.

Key takeaways

  • In 2 days from Marrakech, Zagora (about 360 km) is the only realistic desert; Merzouga (about 560 km) is too far.
  • Expect about 7 hours of driving each day, plus stops.
  • Highlights: Tizi n'Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, Draa Valley palm groves, camel ride and camp night.
  • Downside: the Zagora dunes are low compared with Erg Chebbi.
  • Alternatives: Agafay for a half day, or 3 days to Merzouga for real dunes.

What a 2 day desert trip from Marrakech looks like

This is the typical private itinerary we follow. Shared tours run a similar route with more people and fixed stops.

Day 1: Marrakech - Tizi n'Tichka - Ait Ben Haddou - Draa Valley - Zagora camp

  • Pick-up from your riad or hotel at around 7:00-7:30.
  • Drive over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), the highest major road pass in Morocco, with stops at Atlas viewpoints and Berber villages.
  • Visit the fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site, around midday, then lunch.
  • Short stop in Ouarzazate, then the Anti-Atlas crossing via Agdz and the Draa Valley palm groves.
  • Arrival near Zagora in the late afternoon, camel ride of about 1 hour to the camp, sunset, dinner, music and stars.

Day 2: Zagora - Draa Valley - Ouarzazate - Marrakech

  • Optional sunrise on the dunes, breakfast, camel ride back.
  • Drive back north through the Draa Valley and Ouarzazate, with a stop for lunch.
  • Return over the Tichka pass, arriving in Marrakech around 18:00-19:00.

Drive times: the honest numbers

The biggest surprise for travelers is how much time is spent on the road. Here are realistic figures for a private car or minivan.

LegDistance (approx.)Driving time (no stops)
Marrakech - Ait Ben Haddou190 km3 h 30
Ait Ben Haddou - Ouarzazate30 km30 min
Ouarzazate - Zagora165 km2 h 45
Total Marrakech - Zagoraapprox. 360 kmabout 7 h
Marrakech - Merzouga (for comparison)approx. 560 kmabout 9-10 h

With stops for photos, lunch and the Ait Ben Haddou visit, day 1 lasts 10-11 hours. The road over the Atlas is good asphalt but winding; if you suffer from motion sickness, take a tablet before leaving and ask for the front seat.

Pros and cons of a 2 day desert trip

The pros

  • It fits a short holiday. If you have 4-5 days in Morocco, it lets you sleep in the desert without losing your Marrakech time.
  • Spectacular scenery on the way. The Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou and the Draa Valley are highlights in their own right.
  • A real desert night. The camel ride, the silence, the campfire and the stars are genuine.
  • Lower cost than a 3-day trip: one night, fewer kilometres.

The cons

  • Long days in the car, about 14 hours of driving in total.
  • Smaller dunes. The Zagora dunes are typically 20-50 m high, on a stony plain, not the vast sand sea of Erg Chebbi.
  • Short time in camp: you arrive near sunset and leave after breakfast.
  • Less flexibility on shared tours, with fixed stops and large groups.

Zagora vs Merzouga in 2 days: can you reach Merzouga?

Many websites sell a "2-day Merzouga tour from Marrakech". It exists, but we advise against it: it means roughly 10 hours on the road each day, arriving at camp after dark and leaving at dawn. You see the big dunes for an hour or two, mostly from the car. In our experience, guests who choose it often regret it.

If you start in Fes instead, the picture changes: Merzouga is about 470 km away, so a 2-day Fes-Merzouga round trip is more reasonable, though still long. For the full comparison of the two deserts, read Zagora vs Merzouga: which desert to choose.

Better alternatives if 2 days does not suit you

Less time: the Agafay desert

If even 2 days is too much, the stony Agafay desert is only 40 km from Marrakech. You can enjoy a camel ride, quad biking and a sunset dinner with Atlas views and be back in your riad the same night. It is not the Sahara, but it is a lovely evening; see our Agafay desert guide.

More time: 3 days to Merzouga

With one extra day you can reach the high dunes of Erg Chebbi, sleeping in the Dades Valley on the way and passing the Todra Gorge. It is the itinerary we recommend most. Our guide on getting from Marrakech to Merzouga explains the route in detail.

Day trip: Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou

If the kasbahs interest you more than the dunes, a long day trip to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate covers the scenery of day 1 without the overnight.

Private or shared 2-day tour?

Shared tours are cheaper, approx. 50-90 EUR per person with a basic camp, but they use 17-seat minibuses, fixed stops and often a large camp. A private tour costs more, approx. 180-280 EUR per person for two travelers depending on season and camp, but you choose the departure time, the stops and the camp, and your driver adapts the pace. On a long drive like this, that flexibility matters.

Our private 2-day Marrakech to Zagora desert tour includes a private air-conditioned vehicle, driver, camel ride, camp night with dinner and breakfast. For longer options, browse all our Sahara desert tours from Marrakech.

Our verdict: is it worth it?

Yes, a 2 day desert trip from Marrakech is worth it if you have limited time, you love road trips and mountain scenery, and you understand that the dunes near Zagora are modest. It is not worth it if your dream is the giant dunes of the Sahara, or if long hours in a vehicle are difficult for you. In that case, go for 3 days to Merzouga or keep it simple with Agafay. You can learn more about Ait Ben Haddou on the UNESCO World Heritage page.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours is the drive from Marrakech to Zagora?

The drive from Marrakech to Zagora covers about 360 km and takes around 7 hours without stops, via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley. With a visit to Ait Ben Haddou, lunch and photo stops, the first day usually lasts 10 to 11 hours, arriving at the camp in time for sunset.

Is a 2 day desert trip from Marrakech too tiring?

It is tiring but manageable for most adults. You spend about 7 hours driving each day on a good but winding mountain road. A private tour helps because you control breaks and departure times. For young children, older travelers or anyone prone to motion sickness, we recommend Agafay or a slower 3-day itinerary instead.

Can I see big sand dunes on a 2 day trip from Marrakech?

Not really. In 2 days you reach Zagora, where the dunes are small, generally under 50 m. The big dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga are about 560 km from Marrakech and need at least 3 days to visit comfortably. If high dunes are essential, plan a 3-day or 4-day trip.

What should I bring on a 2 day desert trip?

Pack a small overnight bag with a warm layer for the evening, comfortable shoes, a scarf or cheche against sun and sand, sunscreen, sunglasses, a headlamp, wet wipes and any medication. Leave your big suitcase in your Marrakech riad if possible. Bring some cash in dirhams for drinks, tips and lunch stops.
