Zagora vs Merzouga: Which Moroccan Desert Should You Choose?

Choose Merzouga if you want the tall golden dunes of Erg Chebbi and have at least 3 days; choose Zagora if you only have 2 days and want a taste of the desert without the 9-10 hour drive.

Zagora vs Merzouga comes down to time and expectations. Merzouga, at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes, gives you the postcard Sahara with sand mountains up to about 150 m high, but it sits roughly 560 km from Marrakech and needs at least 3 days. Zagora is about 360 km away and fits into a 2-day trip, but its dunes are small and scattered.

After more than 12 years of running private desert tours from Marrakech and Fes, this is the question our team hears most often. Below we compare both deserts honestly, so you can choose the one that matches your schedule, budget and travel style.

Key takeaways

  • Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) has high, continuous orange dunes; Zagora has low dunes on a mostly stony plain.
  • Marrakech to Zagora is about 7 hours; Marrakech to Merzouga is 9-10 hours of driving.
  • Zagora suits a 2-day trip; Merzouga needs 3 days minimum, ideally 4.
  • Both routes cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass and pass Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate.
  • From Fes, Merzouga is the obvious choice (about 470 km, 7-8 hours).

The dunes: what you will actually see

Merzouga and Erg Chebbi

Erg Chebbi is a true erg: a continuous field of wind-blown sand roughly 22 km from north to south and up to 5-10 km wide, rising abruptly from the black stony hamada near the Algerian border. The highest dunes reach about 150 m above the surrounding plain, and the colour shifts from pale gold at noon to deep orange and red at sunset. If your mental image of the Sahara comes from films, this is it.

Camps sit inside the dunes, so from your tent you see nothing but sand. Climbing a big dune at sunrise is the highlight for most of our guests.

Zagora and the Draa Valley

Zagora is a palm-oasis town in the Draa Valley, famous for the old sign reading "Tombouctou 52 jours" (52 days to Timbuktu by camel). The desert camps are usually set on small dune patches a short drive or camel ride from town, often around Tinfou, about 25 km south of town. The dunes are real sand, but they are modest and surrounded by rocky desert.

Be honest with yourself: if tall, endless dunes are the main reason for your trip, Zagora may disappoint. If the journey, the kasbahs and a night under the stars matter more, it can be perfect.

Drive time and route: how long does it take?

Both deserts start the same way from Marrakech: over the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), then down to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. After Ouarzazate the routes split.

  • To Zagora: south through Agdz and the Draa Valley, one of the most beautiful palm valleys in Morocco. Total about 7 hours of driving, which is why a 2-day Zagora trip is doable, although it is still a long first day.
  • To Merzouga: east along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs via Skoura, Kelaa M'Gouna (Valley of Roses), the Dades Valley, Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, then Erfoud. It is about 9-10 hours of driving, so we always split it with a night in the Dades Valley.

In our experience, travelers who try to reach Merzouga in one day from Marrakech arrive exhausted and see nothing on the way. For a detailed breakdown of the Merzouga route, read our guide on how to get from Marrakech to Merzouga.

Budget and trip length compared

Zagora is cheaper overall because it is shorter: one night of accommodation, fewer fuel kilometres and fewer meals. Merzouga costs more simply because you need at least two nights and more driving days.

Who should choose Zagora, and who should choose Merzouga?

Pick Zagora if

  • You only have 2 days available for the desert.
  • You want to see Ait Ben Haddou and the Draa Valley palm groves, with a desert night as a bonus.
  • You are travelling with young children or older travelers who prefer fewer hours in the car per trip.
  • Your budget is tight but you still want to sleep in a desert camp.

Pick Merzouga if

  • You have 3 days or more and want the iconic, high Sahara dunes.
  • Photography, sunrise on the dunes and a long camel trek matter to you.
  • You are travelling between Marrakech and Fes anyway (the desert is a natural link between the two).
  • You want activities such as sandboarding, a 4x4 loop around the erg or a visit to the Gnawa village of Khamlia.

Best time to visit each desert

The seasons are similar for both, since they are only about 250 km apart. The best months are March to May and late September to November, with warm days around 22-30 C and cool nights. December to February brings sunny days around 17-20 C but nights that can drop close to 0 C, so warm layers are essential. June to August is very hot, with daytime peaks often above 40 C; if you travel in summer, we schedule camel rides at sunset and sunrise only.

Merzouga can occasionally get spring sandstorms (often in March-April). Zagora is slightly lower and more sheltered by the Draa palm groves. For month-by-month details, see our Merzouga weather guide. You can also read background on the dunes on Wikipedia's Erg Chebbi page.

Our verdict: Zagora or Merzouga?

If you can give the desert 3 or 4 days, go to Merzouga: the dunes of Erg Chebbi are in a different league, and the route through the Dades and Todra gorges is one of the great drives in North Africa. If you truly only have 2 days, Zagora is a good, honest compromise, as long as you know the dunes are smaller. And if you have less than that, a half day in the stony Agafay desert near Marrakech is better than a rushed overnight.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zagora or Merzouga better for a first desert trip?

For most first-time visitors Merzouga is better because the Erg Chebbi dunes are high, continuous and match the classic image of the Sahara. Zagora is better only when you have 2 days or less, since it is about 3 hours closer to Marrakech. If time allows a 3-day trip, we usually recommend Merzouga.

Can you do Merzouga in 2 days from Marrakech?

Technically yes, but we do not recommend it. Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech, so a 2-day trip means roughly 10 hours of driving each day with almost no stops. You would arrive at camp after dark and leave at dawn. A 3-day itinerary with a night in the Dades Valley is far more enjoyable.

Are the Zagora dunes real Sahara dunes?

Yes, the dunes near Zagora are genuine sand dunes on the edge of the Sahara, but they are small, usually under 50 m, and set in a stony landscape. They are fine for a camel ride and a night in a camp. If you want a vast sea of tall dunes, Erg Chebbi near Merzouga is the place.

Which desert is closer to Fes?

Merzouga is much closer to Fes: about 470 km, or 7-8 hours of driving via Ifrane, Midelt and the Ziz Valley. Zagora is far from Fes and not practical. That is why most travelers starting in Fes go to Merzouga and continue to Marrakech, turning the desert into the highlight of a cross-country route.
