Luxury Desert Camp Merzouga: What's Included, Prices and Booking

A luxury desert camp in Merzouga is a private tented suite in the Erg Chebbi dunes with an en-suite bathroom, real beds, heating or fans, a candlelit dinner and a dune-view terrace, typically for approx. 150-400 EUR per person per night.

A luxury desert camp in Merzouga is a cluster of spacious tented suites set inside the Erg Chebbi dunes, each with a private bathroom, a proper bed, electricity and a terrace facing the sand. Dinner is served by candlelight, there is usually live Berber or Gnawa music around a fire, and you wake up to sunrise over the highest dunes in Morocco. Expect to pay approx. 150-400 EUR per person per night, half board included.

We book luxury camps for honeymooners, families and travelers who want the magic of the Sahara without giving up comfort. This guide explains exactly what you get, how it differs from a standard camp, what it costs and how to book the right one.

Key takeaways

  • Luxury camps in Merzouga offer en-suite bathrooms with hot showers and flush toilets inside your tent.
  • Standard camps have shared bathrooms and simpler tents; the dunes and the sky are the same.
  • Prices range from approx. 150 to 400 EUR per person per night with dinner and breakfast.
  • Book 1-3 months ahead for March-May, October-November and the Christmas/New Year period.
  • Most guests reach camp by camel at sunset, with luggage carried separately by 4x4.

What does a luxury desert camp in Merzouga include?

The word "luxury" is used loosely in Merzouga, so it helps to know what a genuine luxury camp offers. These are the features we check before recommending a camp to our guests.

The tent

  • A large tent of around 25-50 square metres, with Berber rugs, lamps and real furniture.
  • A double or twin bed with a proper mattress, quality linen and thick blankets for winter.
  • Electricity from solar panels, with sockets to charge phones and cameras.
  • Heating in winter or a fan or air cooling in summer in the better camps.

The bathroom

  • An en-suite bathroom inside or attached to the tent, with a hot shower, washbasin and flush toilet.
  • Towels and basic toiletries provided.

The experience

  • Welcome mint tea and dates on arrival.
  • A multi-course dinner (soup, salads, tagine or mechoui, dessert) served in a restaurant tent or on the sand.
  • Live drumming or Gnawa music around a campfire, and stargazing.
  • Breakfast at sunrise, often with a view across the dunes.
  • Optional extras such as sandboarding, quad biking, a sunset camel ride or a private dinner set up on a dune.

Many of our guests tell us the moment they remember most is not the shower or the bed, but sitting on the dune behind the camp at sunrise. The luxury simply lets you enjoy that without a sleepless, cold night beforehand.

Luxury vs standard desert camp: what is the difference?

The setting is identical: both types of camp sit among the same Erg Chebbi dunes, and you get the same sunset, the same stars and the same camel ride. The difference is comfort and service.

Between the two, many camps now sell "comfort" or "superior" tents with a private bathroom at a mid-range price, approx. 90-150 EUR per person. For most couples, this middle category is excellent value. For a wider comparison across regions, see our article on the best desert camps in Merzouga and Zagora.

How much does a luxury desert camp in Merzouga cost?

Prices depend on the camp, the season and the tent type. Indicative ranges per person per night, based on two people sharing, dinner and breakfast included:

  • Comfort/superior tent with private bathroom: approx. 90-150 EUR.
  • Luxury tent: approx. 150-250 EUR.
  • Top-end or "royal" suites with a private terrace or plunge-pool area: approx. 250-400 EUR or more.

The camel ride and 4x4 transfer to the camp are usually included when you book through a tour. Peak periods such as Christmas, New Year and Easter carry supplements, and the New Year gala dinner is often charged extra. Always check what is included before travel, because prices change every season. Our article on how much a Morocco tour costs puts these figures in the context of a full trip.

How do you get to a luxury camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes?

Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech and about 470 km from Fes, so most guests arrive on day 2 or day 3 of a private tour. Your driver takes you to the edge of the dunes near Merzouga or Hassi Labied in the late afternoon. From there you have two options:

  1. Camel ride at sunset (most popular): about 1-1.5 hours across the dunes, while your suitcases go separately by 4x4.
  2. 4x4 transfer: about 15-30 minutes, ideal for families with small children, travelers with limited mobility or late arrivals.

Pack a small overnight bag for the camel ride: warm layer, headlamp, water, sunscreen and your camera. The next morning, after sunrise and breakfast, you ride or drive back to meet your driver and continue towards Fes or Marrakech.

Is a luxury camp worth it? Who it suits best

In our experience, the upgrade is most worth it for:

  • Honeymooners and couples celebrating a special occasion; it pairs well with the ideas in our guide to romantic destinations for a Morocco honeymoon.
  • Winter travelers (December-February), when nights can fall close to 0 C and a heated tent with a hot shower makes a real difference.
  • Families and older travelers who value a private bathroom at night.
  • Anyone staying two nights in the desert, which we recommend if your schedule allows.

If you are a backpacker on a budget, or you care mostly about the dunes and the stars, a good standard camp is perfectly fine. You will share the same view.

How to book a luxury desert camp in Merzouga

  1. Fix your dates first. Spring (March-May), autumn (October-November) and the holiday season fill up quickly; book 1-3 months ahead.
  2. Combine it with your transport. The camp is only reachable with a 4x4 or camel, so it is easiest to book it as part of a private tour that handles transfers. Our 7-day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga with a luxury desert camp is designed around this experience, and all our Merzouga desert tours can be upgraded to a luxury camp.
  3. Ask about the tent location. Camps deeper in the dunes feel more remote; camps near the edge are quicker to reach.
  4. Confirm what is included: dinner, breakfast, drinks, camel ride, 4x4 transfer, activities.
  5. Mention special requests: birthday cake, private dinner on the dune, vegetarian meals or twin beds.

Note that alcohol is not served in all camps; ask in advance if this matters to you. For general information on travelling in Morocco, the official tourism site Visit Morocco is a useful starting point, and our guide on what to expect on a Sahara desert tour covers the full experience.

Frequently asked questions

Do luxury desert camps in Merzouga have private bathrooms?

Yes. A genuine luxury camp in Merzouga gives every tent its own en-suite bathroom with a hot shower, washbasin and flush toilet. Water is brought in by truck and heated with solar or gas systems, so showers are usually hot. Always confirm this when booking, as some camps called "luxury" only offer upgraded shared facilities.

Is there Wi-Fi or phone signal at a Merzouga luxury camp?

Mobile coverage in the Erg Chebbi dunes is usually decent on Maroc Telecom and often on Orange and Inwi, depending on the camp location. Some luxury camps offer Wi-Fi in the main tent, but it can be slow. We suggest seeing the night as a chance to disconnect, enjoy the music and look at the stars.

Are luxury desert camps cold at night in winter?

From December to February, desert nights can drop to around 0-5 C. Luxury camps provide thick blankets and many have electric heaters in the tents, plus hot water in the bathroom, so you sleep comfortably. You will still want a warm jacket, hat and closed shoes for sunrise on the dunes and the evening around the fire.

How far in advance should I book a luxury camp in Merzouga?

For March to May, October to November and the Christmas and New Year period, book one to three months in advance, because the best luxury tents sell out first. In the hottest summer months and in January, a few weeks is usually enough. Booking as part of a private tour secures the camp and transfers together.
