The Agafay desert is a rocky stone desert about 40 km (45-60 minutes) south-west of Marrakech, ideal for a half-day of camel riding, quad biking and a sunset dinner with Atlas views. It has no big sand dunes, unlike the Sahara.
The Agafay desert near Marrakech is a stone desert of bare, rolling hills about 40 km south-west of the city, 45-60 minutes by car. It has no tall sand dunes, but it offers wide lunar landscapes, views of the snow-capped High Atlas, camel rides, quad biking and some of the most beautiful sunset dinners in Morocco. It is the easiest way to feel the desert without the long drive to the Sahara.
Our drivers take guests to Agafay almost every day, either as a half-day outing or as an overnight in a camp. Here is what to expect, what to do, how much it costs and how Agafay compares with the real Sahara.
What is the Agafay desert?
Agafay is a plateau of dry, ochre and beige hills between Marrakech and the foothills of the High Atlas. Geographers would call it a hamada or stony desert: the ground is made of compacted earth, rocks and gravel, with almost no vegetation. The colours change constantly, from pale cream at midday to gold and pink at sunset.
On a clear day, especially between November and April, you see the snowy peaks of the Atlas, including the Toubkal massif, rising behind the hills. The Lalla Takerkoust lake, a reservoir created by a dam, sits at the edge of the area and adds a surprising blue touch to the landscape.
Many travelers expect golden dunes when they hear "desert". In Agafay there are none, and it is better to know this before you go. Treat it as a dramatic, quiet landscape close to the city, not as a substitute for the Sahara.
Things to do in the Agafay desert
Camel ride
A camel ride of 30 minutes to 1 hour across the hills, ideally in the late afternoon, is the classic activity. It is gentle and suitable for children from about 5-6 years old.
Quad biking and buggies
Quad and buggy tours of 1-2 hours follow dirt tracks across the hills and down to dry riverbeds. A short briefing is given and helmets are provided. Buggies are good for couples or a parent with a child.
Sunset dinner
The highlight for most of our guests. Camps set up tables on terraces facing west, serve mint tea as the sun goes down and then a Moroccan dinner of salads, tagine and fruit, often with live music and a fire. On a clear evening the sky fills with stars far brighter than in Marrakech.
Overnight in a camp
Agafay has dozens of camps, from simple tents to designer lodges with pools. Sleeping there means silence, a sky full of stars and sunrise over the Atlas, while staying only an hour from the city.
Other activities
- Horse riding at sunrise or sunset.
- Hiking and e-bike tours on the plateau.
- Yoga sessions offered by some lodges.
- A stop at Lalla Takerkoust lake.

Agafay vs the Sahara: which one should you choose?
This is the most common question we get about Agafay. The honest answer: they are completely different experiences.

|---|---|---|---|
| Distance from Marrakech | approx. 40 km | approx. 560 km | approx. 360 km |
| Travel time | 45-60 min | 9-10 h | about 7 h |
| Landscape | stony hills, Atlas views | high orange sand dunes up to about 150 m | small dunes, palm valleys |
| Minimum time | half day | 3 days | 2 days |
| Typical price (approx., per person) | approx. 40-120 EUR for an outing with dinner | approx. 320-520 EUR for a private 3-day tour | approx. 180-280 EUR for a private 2-day tour |
Choose Agafay if you have a short stay in Marrakech, travel with small children, or want a relaxing evening. Choose the Sahara if dunes are on your bucket list. If you are hesitating between the two Sahara options, read Zagora vs Merzouga: which desert to choose, and if you are tempted by a short overnight, see whether a 2-day desert trip from Marrakech is worth it.
How to get to the Agafay desert from Marrakech
There is no public transport to Agafay. The usual options are:
- Private driver: the most flexible option. Your driver picks you up from your riad, waits during the activities and drives you back after dinner. Count about 45-60 minutes each way along the road towards Amizmiz.
- Camp transfer: many camps offer a pick-up for dinner guests, often in a shared minibus at a fixed time.
- Rental car: possible, but the last kilometres are dirt tracks and driving back at night is not relaxing.
A popular plan is to combine Agafay with another excursion: for example the Atlas Mountains and Berber villages in the morning, then Agafay for sunset. All our day trips from Marrakech can be adapted to end with a sunset in Agafay.
Agafay prices and timing
Indicative prices per person, which vary with the camp and season (check before travel):
- Camel ride of about 1 hour: approx. 20-40 EUR.
- Quad biking, 1-2 hours: approx. 30-60 EUR.
- Sunset dinner with transfer: approx. 40-90 EUR, more in luxury camps.
- Overnight in a camp, half board: approx. 70-250 EUR depending on comfort.
Best time to go: October to May. In winter, sunset is around 17:30-18:00, so leave Marrakech by about 15:00. In summer (June to September), midday temperatures often exceed 38-40 C, so only go for sunset and dinner. You can check exact sunset times for Marrakech on timeanddate.com. Bring a warm layer: evenings in Agafay are noticeably cooler than in the city.
Our tips for a great Agafay experience
- Book the sunset slot, not midday; the light and temperature are far better.
- Choose a camp with a west-facing terrace and Atlas views.
- If you want to drink wine with dinner, ask in advance: only some camps serve alcohol.
- Bring a scarf for quad biking, as the tracks are dusty.
- On a Marrakech stay of 3-4 days, Agafay fits perfectly into the itinerary; see our ideas for top things to do in Marrakech.
If after Agafay you feel the call of the big dunes, our Sahara desert tours from Marrakech take you to Merzouga or Zagora with a private driver.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Agafay desert have sand dunes?
No, Agafay is a stony desert made of rocky hills and compacted earth, without real sand dunes. Some camps have small patches of sand for decoration, but the landscape is very different from the Sahara. If sand dunes are what you want, you need to travel to Merzouga or Zagora, which takes at least two days from Marrakech.
How far is the Agafay desert from Marrakech?
The Agafay desert is about 40 km south-west of Marrakech, roughly 45 to 60 minutes by car depending on the camp and traffic leaving the city. The last part is often a dirt track. Most visitors go with a private driver or a camp transfer and return to Marrakech the same evening after dinner.
Is the Agafay desert worth visiting?
Yes, if you go with the right expectations. Agafay is worth it for a relaxing half-day with a camel ride or quad, an unforgettable sunset and a dinner under the stars close to Marrakech. It is less worth it if you expect Sahara dunes. For short stays and families, it is an excellent choice.
What is the best time of day to visit Agafay?
Late afternoon is best. Arrive about two hours before sunset for a camel ride or quad tour, watch the sun go down behind the hills with mint tea, then stay for dinner and the stars. Midday is hot and the light is flat, especially between June and September when temperatures can exceed 38 C.
