A hot air balloon flight in Marrakech takes off at sunrise about 30-45 minutes from the city, lasts around 45-60 minutes with views of the High Atlas, and costs approx. 150-250 EUR per person in a shared basket.
A hot air balloon ride in Marrakech is a sunrise flight of about 45 to 60 minutes over the plains and Berber villages outside the city, with views of the snow-capped High Atlas on clear days. Hotel pick-up is very early, usually between about 4:30 and 7 am depending on the season, and a shared basket costs approx. 150-250 EUR per person including breakfast. Here is how a flight works, the best season, what you will see and how to choose a safe operator.
How a Marrakech hot air balloon flight works
Most balloon operators launch from sites north and north-east of Marrakech, near the Jbilet hills and the rural areas around the road to Fes, or sometimes towards the Agafay plateau. These open plains are about 30 to 45 minutes' drive from the medina, away from the city's air traffic and buildings.
A typical morning, step by step
- Pick-up: a minibus or 4x4 collects you from your riad or hotel, or from the nearest car-accessible point outside the medina.
- Tea at the launch site: while you sip mint tea and eat a small snack, the crew inflates the envelope with fans, then burners. Watching the balloon rise in the dark is part of the show.
- Safety briefing: the pilot explains the landing position (knees bent, holding the rope handles, back to the direction of travel).
- Take-off at dawn: you lift off gently, almost without feeling it, and climb as the sun rises over the Atlas.
- The flight: 45 to 60 minutes, drifting with the wind. Pilots typically vary altitude from treetop level to around 1,000 metres above ground.
- Landing and breakfast: the chase vehicle follows the balloon; after landing, most operators serve a Berber breakfast with msemen pancakes, bread, honey, olive oil, eggs and tea, then present a flight certificate.
- Return: you are back in Marrakech around 10 or 11 am, with the rest of the day free.
What you see from the balloon
The landscape below is the Haouz plain: palm groves, olive orchards, red earth villages with flat roofs, dry riverbeds and shepherds with their flocks. Looking south, the High Atlas wall stretches across the horizon, including on clear winter days the snow on Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa. Towards the city you can sometimes make out the Koutoubia minaret.

Do not expect sand dunes: the nearest big dunes are in Merzouga and Zagora, many hours away. If you dream of the Sahara, plan a Sahara desert tour from Marrakech separately; the balloon is about the Atlas and rural Morocco.
Best season for a hot air balloon in Marrakech
Balloons fly year-round, but conditions differ a lot by month. Sunrise in Marrakech ranges from around 6:20 am in June to about 8:30 am in January (clocks also shift during Ramadan), so pick-up times shift accordingly; you can check exact times on timeanddate's Marrakech sunrise page.
| Period | Approx. pick-up | Dawn temperature | Atlas views | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dec - Feb | 6:30 - 7:00 am | 3-8°C | Excellent, snowy peaks | Coldest; occasional fog or rain cancellations |
| Mar - May | 5:00 - 6:15 am | 10-16°C | Very good, snow until April | Green fields, high demand, book early |
| Jun - Aug | 4:30 - 5:15 am | 18-25°C | Often hazy | Pleasant at dawn, but very hot by 11 am |
| Sep - Nov | 5:30 - 6:30 am | 12-20°C | Good, clearer after first rains | Comfortable; popular in October |

Marrakech balloon ride prices
Prices depend on the operator, the season, the basket size and what is included. The figures below are approx. per person and should be checked when booking.
- Classic shared flight: approx. 150-250 EUR, in a basket carrying from about 8 to 20 passengers, with transfer, tea, breakfast and certificate.
- Premium flight: approx. 250-350 EUR, smaller basket, longer flight or a gourmet breakfast.
- Private basket: approx. 350-600 EUR per person for two people, popular for proposals and honeymoons.
- Children: often reduced; minimum age or height rules apply (frequently around 6 years), so check.
Very cheap offers sometimes mean older equipment, overcrowded baskets or very short flights. In our experience it pays to choose a recognised operator over the lowest price.
Is a hot air balloon in Marrakech safe?
Ballooning is a regulated activity in Morocco, and established operators work with licensed pilots, maintained equipment and insurance. Accidents are rare, but no aerial activity is risk-free, so do these checks before booking:
- Ask whether pilots hold a recognised licence and how many flying hours they have.
- Ask for the maximum number of passengers per basket and the insurance included.
- Choose an operator that cancels when winds are too strong, and refunds or reschedules.
- Read recent reviews about punctuality and safety briefings, not only photos.
Who should not fly
Pregnant women, people with recent surgery, serious back or heart conditions, or limited mobility that prevents climbing into the basket and adopting the landing position should not fly. Landings can be bumpy and the basket may tilt. People afraid of heights are often surprised: the movement is so smooth that many feel calm.
Practical tips from our team
- Book it early in your stay: if the flight is cancelled for wind or fog, you can move to another morning.
- Dress in layers: dawn is cold even in spring, but the burners are hot above your head; a hat or cap is useful.
- Wear closed shoes: launch and landing fields are dusty and stony.
- Plan an easy day after: after a 5 am start, a calm afternoon in your riad or at the hammam works well.
- Carry a little cash for tips to the crew, approx. 20-50 MAD per person.
The balloon combines well with an afternoon in Agafay (our Agafay desert guide explains it), or with a slow first day like the one in our 3 days in Marrakech itinerary. On other days, our private day trips from Marrakech take you to the Atlas valleys, Essaouira or the Ouzoud waterfalls.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a hot air balloon ride in Marrakech?
A shared hot air balloon flight in Marrakech costs approx. 150-250 EUR per person, usually including hotel transfers, tea, a Berber breakfast and a flight certificate. Premium flights with smaller baskets cost approx. 250-350 EUR, and a private basket for two is more. Prices vary with season and operator, so confirm what is included before you pay.
What time does the Marrakech balloon pick you up?
Pick-up is usually 1.5 to 2 hours before sunrise. In summer that can mean around 4:30 to 5:15 am, while in winter it is closer to 6:30 to 7 am. The drive to the launch site takes 30 to 45 minutes, and you are generally back at your accommodation by mid-morning, around 10 or 11 am.
What is the best month for a hot air balloon in Marrakech?
October to April is the best period. The air is clearer, temperatures at dawn are cool but manageable, and from December to April you have the best chance to see snow on the High Atlas. Spring adds green fields and flowers. Summer flights are pleasant at sunrise, but haze often hides the mountains.
What happens if the balloon flight is cancelled?
Flights are cancelled when wind, rain or fog make conditions unsafe, usually decided the evening before or at the launch site. Reputable operators then offer another date or a refund. That is why we recommend booking your flight for one of the first mornings of your Marrakech stay, keeping later mornings available as a backup.
