Imlil is a mountain village 65 km south of Marrakech, about 1.5 hours away at 1,740 m, at the foot of Jbel Toubkal. A day trip combines Asni, an easy 2-4 hour hike to Berber villages like Aroumd and lunch with a local family.
An Imlil day trip from Marrakech takes you 65 km south into the High Atlas, about 1 hour 30 minutes by car, to a mountain village at 1,740 m at the foot of Jbel Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak. The classic day combines a scenic drive through Asni, an easy two to four-hour walk to Berber villages such as Aroumd, and a home-cooked lunch with a local family before returning to Marrakech by late afternoon. Here is how to plan it, which hike to choose and what to expect.
Where is Imlil and why go?
Imlil sits at the end of the Mizane valley, in the Toubkal National Park, created in 1942 as Morocco's first national park. It is the starting point for treks up Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m), but you do not need to climb a summit to love it. Walnut and apple orchards, terraced fields, earth-and-stone villages clinging to the slopes and the views of snowy ridges for much of the year make it the most rewarding mountain escape within easy reach of the city.
The region was hit by the Al Haouz earthquake of September 2023. Many villages have since been rebuilding, and responsible visits that use local guides, guesthouses and family lunches bring direct income to the valley. In our experience, families are glad to welcome visitors again; ask your guide about the current situation before you go.
The route from Marrakech to Imlil
The road heads south across the Haouz plain to Tahannaout, then climbs through the Moulay Brahim gorge to Asni, a market town at about 1,150 m famous for its Saturday souk. The last 17 km from Asni to Imlil follow the valley, with walnut trees and the Toubkal massif ahead.
| Stage | Distance | Approx. drive time | Altitude |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marrakech - Tahannaout | 32 km | 35-40 min | approx. 950 m |
| Tahannaout - Asni (via Moulay Brahim gorge) | 16 km | 25 min | approx. 1,150 m |
| Asni - Imlil | 17 km | 25-30 min | 1,740 m |
| Total Marrakech - Imlil | approx. 65 km | 1 h 30 min | +1,300 m from Marrakech |
Our drivers usually stop at a viewpoint above the Moulay Brahim gorge and, on Saturdays, give you time to walk around the Asni souk with its donkey park, vegetables and household goods.
Easy hikes from Imlil
Imlil offers walks for every level. A local mountain guide is strongly recommended, and is required for higher routes in the national park; check current rules before you go.
Aroumd (Armed) village: the classic
The most popular half-day walk climbs from Imlil to Aroumd, at about 1,900 m, one of the largest villages of the valley, built on a rocky spur facing the Toubkal massif. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours up on a mule track and slightly less down. It is easy for most people in reasonable health, including active children.
The Imlil valley loop
A gentle 2 to 3-hour circuit through orchards, irrigation channels and smaller hamlets such as Tamatert and Ait Souka, with constant views of the mountains. Perfect if you prefer a relaxed pace.
Tizi n'Tamatert pass and beyond
Fitter hikers can climb to Tizi n'Tamatert (approx. 2,280 m) for views over two valleys. The pilgrimage shrine of Sidi Chamharouch (approx. 2,310 m), on the Toubkal trail, is a long return walk of 5 to 6 hours from Imlil and suits only experienced walkers with a full day.

Lunch with a Berber family
For most of our travellers, lunch in a village home is the most memorable part of the day. You sit on cushions in a traditional room or on a roof terrace, wash your hands from a kettle and basin, then share bread baked in a clay oven, olive oil, a tagine of chicken or vegetables cooked on a wood fire, seasonal fruit and endless glasses of mint tea. Your hosts speak Tamazight; a few words like azul (hello) and tanmirt (thank you) bring smiles. To understand the culture better, read our guide to Amazigh (Berber) culture.

Best time to visit Imlil
- March to May: snow on the peaks, blossoming almond, cherry and apple trees, 15-24°C in the valley. Ideal.
- June to August: Imlil is often 8-10°C cooler than Marrakech, a welcome escape from 40°C heat; hike early.
- September to November: walnut and apple harvest, golden colours, stable weather.
- December to February: cold (around 0-10°C), possible snow in the village; the road is usually open but chains or delays can happen after storms.
Mountain weather changes fast, even on a sunny day in Marrakech. For a deeper look at multi-day treks and Toubkal climbs, see our Atlas Mountains trekking guide.
What to bring and practical tips
- Comfortable walking shoes with grip; trails are stony and can be muddy in spring.
- Layers, a windproof jacket, sun hat and sunscreen; the sun is strong at altitude.
- Water, a small backpack and some cash for the guide, lunch tips or small purchases.
- Modest clothing is appreciated in villages: shoulders and knees covered.
- Ask before photographing people, especially women and children.
- Guide tips: approx. 100-200 MAD per group for a half-day is customary; check current rates.
Can you climb Toubkal on a day trip? Technically a few very fit trekkers try it, but it means about 13-15 hours and 2,400 m of ascent; we do not recommend it. Two days with a night at the refuge (approx. 3,200 m) is the safe standard. You can find more on the mountain on the Toubkal Wikipedia page.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Imlil from Marrakech?
Imlil is about 65 km south of Marrakech. The drive takes around 1 hour 30 minutes via Tahannaout and Asni, climbing from about 450 m in Marrakech to 1,740 m in Imlil. The road is paved all the way, with some winding sections after the Moulay Brahim gorge. Private transfers are the most comfortable option for a day trip.
Is the Imlil day trip suitable for beginners?
Yes. The classic walk to Aroumd village or the valley loop is suitable for beginners and families in normal health. Expect two to four hours of walking on mule tracks with some uphill sections, at a relaxed pace with breaks. Your guide can shorten or extend the route. Good shoes and water are all you really need.
Can you climb Mount Toubkal in one day from Marrakech?
It is not recommended. A Toubkal ascent from Imlil involves about 2,400 m of climbing and 13 to 15 hours of walking, plus the drive from Marrakech, with altitude risks. The standard and safer plan is two days, sleeping at the Toubkal refuge at about 3,200 m and summiting at sunrise on the second day with a licensed guide.
Imlil or Ourika Valley: which is better for a day trip?
Choose Imlil for proper mountain scenery, views of Toubkal and quieter hikes between Berber villages. Choose the Ourika Valley for a shorter drive, a riverside setting and the Setti Fatma waterfalls, though it is busier at weekends. Both include traditional lunches. Imlil generally suits walkers, while Ourika suits a more relaxed family day.
