Tarifa to Tangier ferry: the best choice for foot passengers
Fast ferries operated by companies such as FRS and Inter Shipping link Tarifa with the Tangier Ville port several times a day. The arrival is the main advantage. You step out in the modern passenger terminal below the kasbah, and in five minutes you are in the Grand Socco or at your hotel.
How to get to Tarifa
Tarifa is about 20 km west of Algeciras and roughly 2 hours by car from Seville or Malaga airport. Some operators run a free shuttle bus from Algeciras to Tarifa port when you book a ferry ticket. Our travelers coming from Seville or Granada usually take a bus or rental car to Tarifa, return the car in Spain, and are picked up by our driver at Tangier port.
Wind and cancellations
The strong easterly Levante wind can stop the Tarifa crossings, especially in summer. In that case passengers are usually transferred to the Algeciras-Tanger Med route, which adds time. Keep your first afternoon in Morocco flexible.
Algeciras to Tanger Med: frequent sailings and cars
Tanger Med is one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean, and the Algeciras crossing has the most departures, including at night. It is the logical choice with a car or motorhome. Foot passengers can use it too, but remember that Tanger Med is about 45 km from Tangier (40-50 minutes by road). Grand taxis and buses connect it to the city, or a private driver can collect you on arrival.
Taking a car to Morocco
- Bring your vehicle registration document and a Green Card (international insurance) valid for Morocco, or buy local insurance at the port.
- Most Spanish rental companies do not allow their cars to be taken into Morocco. Check your contract first.
- Your vehicle is registered at the border and must leave Morocco with you.
Border formalities, tickets and money
Passport stamp on board
On the Tarifa and Algeciras-Tanger Med crossings, Moroccan border police usually set up a desk on board. Join the queue as soon as you embark to get your entry stamp. If you do not, you may be held back at arrival. Check the visa rules for your nationality before travel in our Morocco visa requirements guide.
Buying tickets
You can buy at the port ticket offices, but booking online with the operator a few days ahead secures your time slot in July and August and around Easter. Approximate fares for a foot passenger are 40-55 EUR one way on the Tarifa route. A car with driver often costs 100-250 EUR one way, depending on season and vehicle size. Open return tickets are sometimes cheaper.
Money on arrival
The Moroccan dirham is a closed currency, so you get it on arrival. There are ATMs and exchange counters near both Tangier ports. For more tips see our Morocco currency and money guide.

When to cross: seasons, time zones and peak days
Crossings run all year. Two things matter most for planning.
- Summer peak: from mid-June to mid-September, Spain's Operation Paso del Estrecho and Morocco's Operation Marhaba handle millions of travelers visiting family. Southbound queues peak in late July and early August, and northbound traffic peaks at the end of August. Foot passengers are less affected, but ships fill up.
- Time zones: Spain uses UTC+1 in winter and UTC+2 in summer. Morocco stays on UTC+1 most of the year and moves back to UTC+0 during Ramadan. In summer Spain is one hour ahead. You can check the current difference on timeanddate.com.
- Weather: winter storms and summer Levante winds can delay sailings. Avoid booking a ferry the same day as a flight home.
Starting a private Morocco tour in Tangier
Arriving by ferry makes Tangier a natural starting point, and in our experience it is the most relaxed way to begin. Our driver waits at the exit of Tangier Ville port (or Tanger Med) with a name sign, and the trip starts straight away. There are no airport queues and no extra flights.
A typical first day is the Tangier medina, the Caves of Hercules and Cap Spartel, then on to Chefchaouen the next morning. See our Tangier to Chefchaouen guide for that leg. From there the classic route continues to Fes, the Sahara at Merzouga, the Dades and Todra gorges and Marrakech. That is the itinerary of our 8-day tour from Tangier to Marrakech, which ends in Marrakech for an easy flight home.
You can compare shorter and longer options on our Morocco tours from Tangier page. If you are combining Andalusia and Morocco, our Morocco and Spain itinerary shows how to split the days.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the ferry from Spain to Morocco?
The shortest crossing, Tarifa to Tangier Ville, takes about one hour. Algeciras to Tanger Med takes around 1.5 hours, and Algeciras to Ceuta about one hour, but Ceuta is a Spanish city, so you still cross a land border. Longer routes from Motril or Almeria take roughly 5 to 8 hours, and Barcelona to Tanger Med more than a day.
Which is better, Tarifa or Algeciras?
For foot passengers Tarifa is usually better, because the ferry arrives in Tangier city centre, close to the medina and hotels. Algeciras has more frequent sailings, including at night, and is the standard choice with a car, but it arrives at Tanger Med, about 45 km from Tangier. If the Levante wind cancels Tarifa sailings, passengers are usually moved to Algeciras.
Do I need to book the ferry to Morocco in advance?
Outside summer and Easter you can often buy a ticket at the port on the day. Between mid-July and late August, and on Moroccan and Spanish holiday weekends, book online a few days ahead, especially with a car, because many families travel at that time. Booking ahead also lets you plan your driver pickup in Tangier precisely.
Where do I get my passport stamped on the ferry?
On the main Strait crossings, Moroccan border police usually work at a desk inside the ship. Queue there soon after departure, with your passport, to get the entry stamp before landing. Passengers who forget may have to wait at the arrival port. Visa requirements depend on nationality, so check the current rules before travel.
