Morocco Desert Tour Prices Explained: What You Really Pay For

A Morocco desert tour costs from approx. EUR 90-160 per person for a 3-day shared Merzouga trip to EUR 300-550+ per person private with a standard camp, and more with a luxury camp. Price depends on privacy, camp class, vehicle, season and days.

A Morocco desert tour price can range from under EUR 100 to well over EUR 1,000 per person for what looks like the same 3-day trip to the Merzouga dunes. The difference comes from five things: shared or private transport, the class of desert camp, the vehicle, the season and the number of days. This guide explains each factor with approximate price ranges, so you can compare quotes and know exactly what you are paying for.

Key takeaways

  • 3-day Marrakech–Merzouga: approx. EUR 90-160 per person shared, EUR 300-550 private with a standard camp, EUR 550-1,000+ private with a luxury camp (based on 2 people).
  • Private tours are priced mainly per vehicle, so the price per person drops sharply for groups of 3-6.
  • The camp is the biggest single variable: a luxury tent can cost three to five times a standard one.
  • Christmas, New Year and Easter are peak periods; summer and January often have the best value.
  • Very cheap tours usually save money on long days, crowded camps and commission shopping stops.

Factor 1: shared vs private desert tour

This is the biggest price driver. A shared tour puts 12 to 17 travellers in a minibus with fixed stops and a fixed schedule. A private tour gives you a vehicle and driver-guide for your group only.

Why shared tours are cheap

  • The cost of the vehicle and driver is split between 15 or more people.
  • Camps are large standard camps that host several groups at once.
  • Stops are short, and some include shops where the operator earns commission.
  • Days are long: the Marrakech to Merzouga drive (about 560 km) is often done with few breaks.

What you pay for on a private tour

  • Departure time and stops you choose, from photo stops on the Tizi n'Tichka to extra time in Aït Ben Haddou.
  • A driver-guide who stays with you for the whole trip.
  • Your choice of hotels, riads and camp class.
  • The option to split the route into 4 or 5 days instead of rushing.

Because a private tour is priced mainly per vehicle, four friends sharing a 4x4 pay much less per person than a couple. Our article on private vs shared desert tours compares comfort and experience in detail.

Factor 2: the desert camp class

The camp in the Erg Chebbi or Zagora dunes is where prices diverge most. In our experience, this is also what guests remember most, so it is worth choosing carefully.

Camp typeWhat you getApprox. price per person per night (half board)
Standard / basicShared tents or simple private tents, shared toilets, mattress and blanketsapprox. EUR 25-50
Comfort / mid-rangePrivate tent with real beds, often en-suite toilet and showerapprox. EUR 60-120
LuxuryLarge tent with en-suite bathroom, hot water, quality bedding, electricity, refined dinnerapprox. EUR 150-350

A luxury camp often adds private dinner settings, heating in winter and sometimes a sunset sandboarding or 4x4 session. Read our luxury desert camp Merzouga guide to see what the top camps include.

Factor 3: the vehicle and the driver-guide

Private tours use either a comfortable air-conditioned minivan or a 4x4 such as a Toyota Land Cruiser or Prado. Both are fine on the asphalt roads to Merzouga and Zagora; a 4x4 is useful for off-road tracks around Erg Chebbi, the Khamlia loop or the route through the Ziz valley's back roads. Expect a 4x4 to cost somewhat more per day.

The driver-guide also matters. An experienced, licensed driver who speaks your language well and knows the region costs more than a seasonal driver, but makes long days safer and far more interesting. At Chahid Voyages Maroc our drivers usually plan the route around light, lunch spots away from tour-bus stops, and fuel so you never waste time.

Factor 4: season and dates

Desert tour prices follow demand:

  • Peak: Christmas and New Year (camps often charge a gala-dinner supplement), Easter, and some European school holidays in October.
  • High: March to May and September to November, the most comfortable months in the Sahara.
  • Value: January, February (cold nights, sunny days) and June to August (very hot, but quieter and sometimes discounted).

Book at least 4 to 8 weeks ahead for peak dates, especially for luxury camps, which have only a few tents. Check our Merzouga weather by month guide before choosing dates.

Factor 5: number of days and route

Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech (9 to 10 hours of driving without stops) and about 470 km from Fes (7 to 8 hours). A 3-day tour covers this in two long driving days. Adding a fourth or fifth day costs more in total but gives you a night in the Dades or Todra gorges, a second night in the dunes, or a slower pace. Zagora is closer, about 360 km from Marrakech, which is why 2-day trips there are cheaper, but the dunes are much smaller.

What is included, and what is extra

Always compare quotes on the same basis. A typical desert tour quote includes:

  • Transport with driver, fuel and tolls.
  • Hotel or kasbah nights on the route with breakfast and dinner.
  • One night in the desert camp with dinner and breakfast.
  • Camel ride to and from the camp (usually 1 to 1.5 hours each way).

Usually extra, approximately:

  • Lunches: approx. EUR 8-15 per person per meal.
  • Entrance fees (kasbahs, local guides in Aït Ben Haddou or Tinghir): a few euros each.
  • Optional activities: quad biking approx. EUR 30-60 per hour, 4x4 dune tour approx. EUR 60-120 per vehicle, sandboarding often free at camps.
  • Drinks and tips for the driver, camel handlers and camp staff.

Warning signs of a tour that is too cheap

  • No clear list of inclusions or camp name.
  • Pick-up at 6 am and arrival in the dunes after dark.
  • Several long shopping stops built into the day.
  • A different, unannounced camp from the one in the photos.

Tell the agency your start and end city, dates, number of travellers, preferred camp class and any extras. A clear quote should name the camp level, the vehicle and every inclusion. Frequently asked questions

How much does a 3-day desert tour from Marrakech cost?

As an approximate guide for two people, a shared 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour costs around EUR 90-160 per person, a private tour with a standard camp around EUR 300-550 per person, and a private tour with a luxury camp around EUR 550-1,000 or more. Larger private groups pay less per person because the vehicle cost is shared.

Why are private desert tours more expensive than shared ones?

On a private tour you pay for a vehicle and driver-guide used only by your group, plus your choice of hotels and camp. On a shared tour, 12 to 17 people split those costs and follow a fixed schedule in large camps. Private tours also allow flexible stops, a slower pace and better-quality accommodation, which all add value and cost.

Is a luxury desert camp worth the extra cost?

For many travellers, yes. A luxury camp gives you a private en-suite bathroom, hot shower, real beds, heating in winter and a much better dinner, which makes a big difference after a long drive. If you are on a tight budget, a comfort camp with private bathroom is a good middle ground at roughly half the price.

When is the cheapest time for a Morocco desert tour?

The best value is usually in January and February, when days are sunny but nights are cold, and in June to August, when temperatures are very high. Prices peak at Christmas, New Year and Easter. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons and are priced in between, so booking early is the best way to save.
