Morocco Itinerary Starting in Casablanca: 6 to 10-Day Loops

Starting in Casablanca, the best Morocco itinerary is a loop: Rabat, Fes, the Sahara at Merzouga, the kasbah valleys and Marrakech, then back to Casablanca. Allow 6 days minimum, 8 for comfort and 10 to add Chefchaouen and Essaouira.

A Morocco itinerary starting in Casablanca works best as a counter-clockwise loop: Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, the Sahara dunes of Merzouga, the kasbah valleys, Marrakech and back to Casablanca. Six days is the minimum to complete this loop, eight days is comfortable, and ten days lets you add Chefchaouen and the coast. Casablanca has the country's main international airport, so it is the most practical starting point for travelers from North America, the Gulf and much of Europe.

Key takeaways

  • The classic loop from Casablanca is about 1,600 to 2,000 km depending on the version.
  • 6 days: Rabat, Fes, Merzouga, Dades, Marrakech, with long driving days.
  • 8 days: same loop with two nights in Fes and Marrakech.
  • 10 days: adds Chefchaouen, Volubilis and a night in Essaouira or Ait Ben Haddou.
  • Casablanca to Marrakech is 240 km (about 2h45) for the return to the airport.

Why start a Morocco itinerary in Casablanca?

Mohammed V International Airport (CMN) is the hub of Royal Air Maroc and receives direct flights from New York, Montreal, Washington, Doha, Dubai, Paris, Madrid, London and many African cities. Starting here usually means fewer connections and cheaper long-haul fares. The city itself deserves half a day for the Hassan II Mosque, but most travelers do not need more; the rest of the time is better spent in the imperial cities and the south. Our Casablanca travel guide covers what to see if you have extra time.

A loop also means you can leave from the same airport, which often keeps return tickets simple. If you prefer to fly out of Marrakech, an open-jaw ticket saves the last drive.

Which direction: Fes first or Marrakech first

In our experience, going north first (Rabat and Fes) and finishing in Marrakech is the better choice for most people. You start with the calmer, more traditional cities, reach the desert in the middle of the trip, and end in lively Marrakech with time to shop and relax before the 2h45 drive back to the airport. Going the other way works too, especially if you have a ticket out of Fes or Tangier.

The 6-day loop: Casablanca, Fes, the Sahara and Marrakech

Six days is the shortest sensible loop, and the pace is brisk.

  1. Day 1: arrival, Hassan II Mosque, drive to Rabat (Hassan Tower, Kasbah of the Udayas).
  2. Day 2: Rabat to Fes via Meknes and Bab Mansour; afternoon in the Fes medina.
  3. Day 3: Fes to Merzouga via Ifrane, the Azrou cedar forest and the Ziz Valley; camel ride and night in a desert camp.
  4. Day 4: sunrise over Erg Chebbi, Todra Gorge, night in the Dades Valley.
  5. Day 5: Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou, Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), Marrakech.
  6. Day 6: morning in the Marrakech medina, drive back to Casablanca or to the airport.

The drawback is limited time in Fes and Marrakech. If you can, add two days.

The 8-day loop: the balanced version

Eight days uses the same route but adds a full guided day in Fes, a full day in Marrakech and a less rushed final morning. This is our most requested format from Casablanca, close to our 9-day tour from Casablanca to Marrakech, which adds one more night along the way.

What the extra days give you

  • A full day with a licensed guide in Fes el Bali: the tanneries, Bou Inania madrasa, Al-Attarine and the Nejjarine fountain.
  • Time to visit Volubilis, the Roman city near Meknes, on the way to Fes.
  • A relaxed day in Marrakech: Bahia Palace, Majorelle Garden, the souks and Jemaa el-Fnaa at night.

The 10-day loop: Chefchaouen, the desert and the coast

Ten days is the complete version. After Rabat, head north to Chefchaouen for two nights, then reach Fes via Volubilis and Moulay Idriss. After the desert and the gorges, sleep at Ait Ben Haddou to see the ksar at dusk, then spend two days in Marrakech. If your flight is late on day 10, you can replace one Marrakech day with Essaouira on the Atlantic coast, returning to Casablanca along the coast road via El Jadida (about 360 km).

Getting around: train, car or private driver?

Morocco's ONCF railway links Casablanca, Rabat, Meknes, Fes and Marrakech, and the Al Boraq high-speed train runs between Casablanca and Tangier; timetables are on oncf.ma. But trains do not reach Chefchaouen, the Sahara, the gorges or Ait Ben Haddou, which are the heart of this itinerary. A private driver covers the whole loop door to door and adapts each day to your energy. Our Morocco tours from Casablanca all include a private vehicle and an English-speaking driver.

If you only need a transfer to Marrakech at the start or end, read our guide to the Casablanca airport to Marrakech transfer. And if the Sahara is your main goal, our dedicated article on the desert tour from Casablanca compares the routes in detail.

When to go and what it costs

The best months for a loop from Casablanca are March to May and late September to November. Summer is fine on the coast but very hot in Fes, Marrakech and the desert by day. As an indication, a private 8-day tour with driver, fuel, mid-range riads and a standard desert camp is approx. 1,000 to 1,900 EUR per person for two people; prices depend on season, group size and accommodation level, so always check a current quote.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for Morocco starting in Casablanca?

A loop from Casablanca through Fes, the Sahara and Marrakech needs at least 6 days, but 8 days is far more comfortable because it gives you full days in Fes and Marrakech. With 10 days you can add Chefchaouen, Volubilis and a night at Ait Ben Haddou or Essaouira without increasing the daily driving time.

Is it better to go from Casablanca to Fes or to Marrakech first?

For most travelers, Fes first is better. You visit Rabat on the way, reach the desert mid-trip and finish in Marrakech, which is ideal for shopping and relaxing before the 2h45 drive back to Casablanca airport. Marrakech first suits travelers who fly home from Fes or Tangier.

Should I spend a night in Casablanca?

Only if your flight arrives late or leaves very early. The Hassan II Mosque can be visited in two hours on arrival day, and Rabat, 90 km away, is a more pleasant place to sleep on the first night. On the last day, Casablanca is easily reached from Marrakech in under three hours.

Can I reach the Sahara by train from Casablanca?

No. The railway stops at Marrakech and Fes, and there is no train to Merzouga or Zagora. From those cities you need a bus, a rental car or a private driver. Most travelers combine the train for the imperial cities with a private desert tour, or choose a private driver for the whole loop.
