A desert tour from Casablanca needs at least 4 days and ideally 5 to 9: Merzouga is about 760-800 km away, so the best plan is a loop via Marrakech and the kasbahs one way and Fes and the Middle Atlas the other, with a night in the Erg Chebbi dunes.
A desert tour from Casablanca is absolutely possible, but it needs time: the Merzouga dunes are about 760 to 800 km from Casablanca by road, so plan at least 4 days and ideally 5 to 9. The smartest option is a loop that goes out via Marrakech and the road of the kasbahs and returns via Fes, or the reverse, with one or two nights in the Sahara. This guide explains the routes, the number of days you need and the best options for each budget.
How far is the Sahara from Casablanca?
Casablanca is on the Atlantic coast, while Morocco's big sand dunes lie on the other side of the Atlas Mountains, near the Algerian border. Here are the main distances our drivers work with:
| Route | Approx. distance | Approx. driving time (without stops) |
|---|---|---|
| Casablanca – Marrakech | 240 km | 2 h 30 min to 3 h |
| Marrakech – Merzouga (via Tizi n'Tichka, Ouarzazate, Dades) | 560 km | 9 to 10 h |
| Casablanca – Rabat | 90 km | 1 h to 1 h 15 min |
| Casablanca – Fes | 290 km | 3 h to 3 h 30 min |
| Fes – Merzouga (via Ifrane, Midelt, Ziz valley) | 470 km | 7 to 8 h |
| Casablanca – Zagora (via Marrakech) | 600 km | 8 to 9 h |
In other words, the desert is roughly as far from Casablanca as London is from Edinburgh, but through mountain passes. That is why every good desert tour from Casablanca breaks the journey with overnight stops.
How many days do you need for a desert tour from Casablanca?
4 days: the minimum
Possible as a loop: Casablanca to the Dades valley via Marrakech on day 1 (a very long day), Merzouga on day 2 with a camp night, Fes on day 3, and back to Casablanca on day 4. It works if you are short on time, but you see the route mostly through the window.
5 to 6 days: the best balance
This is what we recommend to most travellers. It allows a night in Marrakech or Fes, a proper stop at Aït Ben Haddou, a night in the gorges and a relaxed afternoon in the dunes before the sunset camel ride.
8 to 10 days: the full Morocco loop
With a week or more, you can combine the desert with the imperial cities: Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fes, Merzouga, Dades, Marrakech and back. Our 9-day tour from Casablanca to Marrakech is built exactly on this route, and our Morocco itinerary starting in Casablanca shows it day by day.
Route 1: via Marrakech and the road of the kasbahs
This southern route is the most scenic way into the desert. A typical 5-day version:
- Day 1: Casablanca to Marrakech (240 km). Afternoon in the medina and Jemaa el Fna.
- Day 2: Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) to Aït Ben Haddou and the Dades valley.
- Day 3: Todra gorge, then on to Merzouga. Camel ride at sunset and night in a desert camp.
- Day 4: Sunrise on the dunes, then north through the Ziz valley, Midelt and the cedar forests of Ifrane to Fes.
- Day 5: Guided morning in the Fes medina, then back to Casablanca (290 km), optionally via Rabat.
Best for: first-time visitors who want the Atlas, the kasbahs and the dunes. For more on the Marrakech–desert section, see our guide on how to get from Marrakech to Merzouga.

Route 2: via Rabat and Fes
The northern route reaches the desert faster and passes through Morocco's political and spiritual capitals. A typical 6-day version:
- Day 1: Casablanca (Hassan II Mosque) to Rabat (Kasbah of the Udayas, Hassan Tower), then on to Fes.
- Day 2: Full day in Fes el Bali with a local guide: tanneries, medersas, souks. Optional half-day to Meknes and Volubilis.
- Day 3: Fes to Merzouga via Ifrane, the Barbary macaques of Azrou, Midelt and the Ziz valley. Night in the dunes.
- Day 4: Merzouga: 4x4 loop to Khamlia and the dune villages, second night in camp or a kasbah hotel.
- Day 5: Todra gorge, Dades valley and Ouarzazate.
- Day 6: Aït Ben Haddou, Tizi n'Tichka and Marrakech; drop-off in Marrakech or continue to Casablanca airport.
Best for: travellers who also want Fes and Rabat and are happy to finish in Marrakech. Our Fes to Merzouga route guide details the stops on day 3.
Is there a shorter option: Zagora or Agafay?
If you only have 2 or 3 days, there are two alternatives, each with real limits:
- Zagora (3 days from Casablanca): about 600 km away via Marrakech and Ouarzazate. You get a camel ride and a camp night, but the dunes are small compared with Erg Chebbi. Read Zagora vs Merzouga before choosing.
- Agafay (from Marrakech): a stony desert 40 minutes from Marrakech with sunset dinners and camps. Pleasant, but it is not the sand Sahara.
In our experience, travellers who come all the way to Morocco and choose a short option often wish they had added two days for Merzouga.
Private car, train or bus: how to start from Casablanca
- Private tour with pick-up: the simplest choice. Your driver-guide meets you at Casablanca Mohammed V airport or your hotel and stays with you to the end.
- Train plus tour: ONCF trains link Casablanca with Marrakech (about 2 h 40 min) and Fes (about 3 h to 3 h 30 min). The high-speed Al Boraq only serves the Casablanca–Rabat–Tangier line. Check timetables on oncf.ma. You can start a desert tour in Marrakech or Fes.
- Bus: CTM and Supratours reach Merzouga with changes, but it takes a full day each way and leaves you to arrange the camp yourself.
For arrival-day logistics, our guide to the Casablanca airport to Marrakech transfer compares the options.

Frequently asked questions
Can you visit the Sahara from Casablanca in one day?
No. The Merzouga dunes are about 760 to 800 km from Casablanca, roughly 11 to 12 hours of driving each way without stops. Even Zagora is around 600 km away. A day trip is not realistic; the minimum for a real Sahara experience is 4 days, and 5 to 6 days is far more enjoyable.
Is it better to go to the desert via Marrakech or via Fes?
Both are excellent, and the best plan uses both as a loop. Via Marrakech you cross the High Atlas, Aït Ben Haddou and the Dades valley. Via Fes you pass Ifrane, the cedar forests and the Ziz valley and reach the dunes a little faster. Going out one way and back the other avoids repeating any road.
How many days do I need for a desert tour from Casablanca?
Plan at least 4 days, which means two long driving days. We recommend 5 to 6 days for a comfortable loop including one night in Marrakech or Fes and one night in the dunes. With 8 to 10 days, you can add Rabat, Chefchaouen, Meknes and more time in Marrakech for a complete Morocco trip.
Can a desert tour start at Casablanca airport?
Yes. With a private tour, your driver-guide can meet you at Casablanca Mohammed V airport as soon as you land and drive directly to Rabat, Fes or Marrakech, depending on the route. This is ideal after a long-haul flight, as you avoid taxis and train connections with luggage and start your trip immediately.
